Every year, the NWA World Heavyweight Champion would travel to each territory and defend the title against the territories' top contender or champion. Member promotions had to recognize the NWA World Heavyweight Champion as world champion while retaining the ability to promote their own top championships. Like franchises, these territories had the option of NWA membership. The NWA World Heavyweight Championship was created that same year.
